Since inception in 2003, Butt Free Australia (formerly the Butt Littering Trust) has partnered in 92 butt litter reduction projects across Australia.
Successful outcomes across these projects include:
- recording an overall average reduction of 24.6% in butt littering behaviour
- gaining over 89,000 pledges to PLEASE BUTT IT, THEN BIN IT®
- distributing 262,509 personal ashtrays
- engaging nearly 153,000 adults in face-to-face education.
Butt Free Australia has contributed over $2.1 million in this time, with partners in turn contributing a further $2 million in cash and resources.
That's a total of more than $4.1 million invested in butt litter reduction around Australia in six years.
All Butt Free Australia projects focus on influencing behavioural change. Our Butt Free Solutions approach recognises that five key elements – context, awareness, education, infrastructure and enforcement – are the keys to success.
In 2010 our flagship campaign Butt Free City enters its sixth year. Other projects have covered a wide variety of contexts, including transport, outside dining, business premises, beaches, highways and event venues.
A significant number of butt litter management projects were initially funded through an annual grants process. Butt Free Australia now looks to support fewer but larger projects with major partners, in locations where the most butt litter is being generated. It was recognised that a focus on butt litter 'hotspots' around Australia would be more effective – primarily hospitality, transport, large cities and events.
Although Butt Free Australia's annual grants application process no longer applies, we welcome every opportunity to explore partnership possibilities with organisations considering butt litter reduction campaigns in hotspots or emerging problem areas.
While raising national awareness of butt littering on a broader scale and conducting and promoting research are key elements of Butt Free Australia's Strategic Plan, going forward, on-ground projects have been, and remain, the cornerstone of our activities.
