Butt Free City 2009 was held between 23–27 March, with 16 cities participating: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Geelong, Gosford, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Newcastle, Melbourne, Mildura, Port Phillip, Port Adelaide Enfield, Townsville and Wollongong.
Working with local councils, Butt Free City targeted local butt litter hotspots and the provision and appropriateness of permanent infrastructure to help address the issue year round.
Educators approached people on city streets to talk about the environmental, social and economic impacts of butt littering.
In return for a free personal ashtray, educators asked people to make a pledge or commitment to Butt Free Australia's call to action, PLEASE BUTT IT, THEN BIN IT®.
The last day of the campaign, "Butt Litter? FINE! Day", saw 70 fines issued and more than 200 mock fines and 16 warnings delivered to those who did not heed the call to action.
Butt Free City 2009 achieved an average butt littering reduction of 23%, gained 12,500 written and 15,300 verbal pledges – nearly 28,000 in all – and achieved over 8.2 million exposures of its messages.
