Driving the 'Not a Good Look' Message

The ‘Not a Good Look’ message took to the streets of Sydney for the month of October, on the back of 150 taxis as they moved around the CBD and surrounds. Three key messages were conveyed to remind Sydneysiders and visitors alike that butt littering is not a good look: 15,000 plus butts end up on Sydney’s streets every day; rain carries butts through drains and into Sydney Harbour; and butt litter impacts on places where they work, live and play. The message obviously got through with a noticeable spike throughout October in number of visitors to the campaign website with a Sydney or surrounds postcode requesting a personal ashtray. |

The City of Melbourne, EPA Victoria and Melbourne Water joined forces with Butt Free Australia at the start of Spring to highlight the issue of butt litter and its impact on our environment. At the official launch (L-R) Melbourne Water’s General Manager of Waterways Chris Chesterfield, Chairman of EPA Victoria Cheryl Batagol and Butt Free Australia’s Chair Ian Coles, were photographed holding a cylinder containing 10,500 butts - the same number dropped on Melbourne’s streets every working day, of which around one in ten end up in our waterways. Butt FREE Melbourne generated much discussion, especially amongst social media users on our new Facebook page launched in time for the campaign. The social media campaign was combined with print, radio and billboard advertising and supported by three days on hands-on education at Flinders Street Station, Southbank and Bourke Street Mall reminding Melburnians and visitors alike that butt littering is ‘Not a Good Look’. |
Butt FREE Toolkit

The Butt FREE Toolkit is a comprehensive guide to developing successful butt littering reduction projects through fostering behavioural change. The Toolkit focuses on planning projects to address influences on butt littering: how, where and when people litter – or 'butt littering behaviour' – and why they litter, based on knowledge, attitudes and perceptions. These influences and the tools required to address them are known as Butt FREE Solutions: Context, Awareness, Education, Infrastructure and Enforcement. A Statement from Butt Free Australia

Butt Free Australia, as trustee of Butt Littering Trust, has announced that the Trust is to wound up. The decision was made by the Directors in September, following advice from British American Tobacco Australia (BAT Australia) that they are not in a position to continue financial support of the Trust beyond the end of 2011. BAT Australia funded the establishment of the independent Trust in 2003 for the principal purpose of reducing cigarette butt litter and butt littering in Australia. It remains the major funder. In making the announcement, Chair Ian Coles said ‘Obviously we are disappointed with the decision, particularly given the many successful partnership projects we have supported over the years, and in particular the wide spread acceptance and success of our Not a Good Look campaign since its launch in early 2010. 'However we were very pleased at the response to our Expression of Interest process to identify a suitable likeminded organisation to continue the task of reducing butt littering nationally and the outcome will ensure the valuable knowledge and expertise that the Trust has developed is not lost’ Mr Coles added. |
KESAB Announced to Carry on Legacy

Butt Free Australia, as trustee for Butt Littering Trust, has announced KESAB environmental solutions as the successful recipient of its inventory of assets following the Expression of Interest process. In announcing the decision Mr Ian Coles Chair of Butt Free Australia said ‘KESAB environmental solutions has an impressive record in the butt litter and butt littering area, is a long standing partner of Butt Free Australia and is arguably one of, if not the most senior and experienced anti-litter organisation in Australia’. The inventory of assets includes the websites www.buttfree.org.au and www.notagoodlook.com.au, associated intellectual property, campaign resources and a monetary contribution to support initial activity. On behalf of KESAB environmental solutions, Executive Director Mr John Phillips OAM said ‘We believe that KESAB has the skills, knowledge, understanding and credentials to deliver throughout Australia and engage a wide range of stakeholders, thus ensuring a legacy for the Butt Littering Trust. We thank Butt Free Australia for putting their confidence in KESAB’. Following the transfer of the assets over the coming month, the Butt Littering Trust will be officially wound-up and the corporate trustee, Butt Free Australia, will be voluntarily liquidated. From when the Butt Littering Trust was established back in July 2003, through its transformation to Butt Free Australia in late 2009 and all the way along the ‘Not a Good Look’ campaign, Butt Free Australia has worked and partnered with some amazingly passionate and committed organisations and individuals.
